How to make your move child-friendly

Posted on November 17, 2021 at 12:10 PM

We all know that moving home can be stressful, from packing everything up, to finding a removal firm and trying to make sure everything is put away in the right place. However moving with children around can make this even more difficult. We know it isn’t always possible to get childcare when moving, especially at the minute, so here are a few ways to make the move with kids a bit easier and hopefully accident-free!

Explore your garden/outside area - Kids love to play outside and can be occupied for hours in the garden with their wild imaginations, but before you let the little ones roam free outside, have a walk around to make sure there is no way for them to accidentally leave your property onto the road or into other people’s gardens. If there are any ponds or puddles, make sure to find a way to fence them off, as while children may think they are extremely fun, water can be a massive danger.

Safety gates - If you have small children, we recommend getting safety gates in place as soon as you are in the property. These gates help keep the kids away from any stairs, furniture you don’t want them near, or any boxes that you are yet to unpack. This will also help you keep an eye on them when moving if they are located in only a small area of the house!

Keep the move fun! Moving can be stressful for everyone in the family, and kids won’t necessarily understand what is happening and why they are in a new and unfamiliar environment. By keeping them involved and getting out familiar items from your previous home, they are more likely to settle and become comfortable with this new and unknown environment.

Get to know the local area - New surroundings can be intimidating, especially if children haven’t moved to a new house before and don’t fully understand what is happening or where they are. To overcome this, why not taking them out exploring, find a local park they can play in, take them to a local café for a hot chocolate or find a nice walk where they can be in touch with nature. It may also be beneficial to do a practice run of the school trip, so you know where you’re going, and the kids will know how long it takes!
